Randall Peterson, R.S.

As a Healthy Green Building Specialist, Randall Peterson is uniquely qualified to provide healthy building consulting and coaching support for builders, developers, property owners and managers. Mr. Peterson is a healthy building pioneer and expert with over thirty years of experience in environmental health and safety.

His work and association with such organizations as The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), The National Environmental Safety Association, The International Council of Cruise Lines, The National Indoor Air Quality Institute and the National Sanitation Foundation serve as the foundation for successfully developing and implementing Healthy Green Building Certification Programs.

Mr. Peterson literally “wrote the book” on Healthy Cruise Ship Building for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He has been a world leader and pioneer in developing healthy building construction, operations and maintenance programs for both cruise ships and commercial developments worth over 5 billion dollars in just the last 15 years. This includes the design, construction management and commissioning of cruise vessels that are literally floating communities consisting of approximately 800 crew and 2000 passengers.

Implementing a Healthy Green Building Program is a complex task, as construction management and third party oversight requires a coordinated team approach and a unique set of skills and experiences to coordinate the requirements of various agencies, architects, contractors, engineers, investors, developers and other stakeholders.

Mr. Peterson understands that because our environment is changing and human health sensitivities are also changing, building and property developers must now take proactive steps to protect against environmental hazards and the risk of related lawsuits. In other words, “Mother Nature” has changed the rules of the game for new construction and the operations and maintenance of these properties.

Buildings under construction today must be built to exacting standards, so material and equipment selection is critical. This process is so critical today that it requires health and safety experience along with building science expertise. This requires research into using the most advanced materials and applicable technologies, while designing performance standards to measure results.

Another area of expertise that Randy excels in is the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning equipment selection and performance testing for balancing and comfort. He is responsible for working closely with engineers and contractors involving the design, selection and commissioning of the mechanical systems.

Randy led the development of an uninhabited 20-acre island for cruise ship passengers, literally from the ground up. The island had no facilities and everything for the infrastructure had to be developed including, power, water, waste service, buildings, food service, bars, and docking facilities. The island is now fully functional, serving up to three cruise ships everyday and is consistently rated as a highlight of any cruise by passengers that visit.

It is this combination of unique experience, leadership capabilities and expertise that makes Mr. Peterson ideally qualified to head HGIA's Healthy Green Building Certification Programs. Many of the same elements involved in the development of healthy cruise ships for the CDC are incorporated in the Healthy Green Building Certification Programs for commercial buildings, multi use properties, apartment complexes and single family developments.

He is a member of the National Environmental Health Association, American Industrial Hygienist Association and is a Certified Indoor Air Quality Specialist. He has served on many national committees such as The International Council of Cruise Lines and the National Sanitation Foundation.
